Summer training July 28-29, 2010 ~  from 8:30-3:30 at the Science Hall on the
WLC campus

Each summer Operation Science has a 2-day training session to introduce teachers to strategies for teaching science concepts, skills and attitudes.  One of our goals is to encourage teachers to get students actively involved in the learning process.  We also encourage teachers to use a variety of strategies other than textbook reading or teacher demonstration.

Day one of training is a general session for all teachers.  Model inquiry lessons are presented so that teachers can learn ideas for encouraging student participation and improving problem solving skills.  Teachers will be able to gain insight from the student perspective as they are engaged in hands-on learning using the skills of science. (observing, communicating, measuring, inferring, making models, and using the scientific method)

The second day is spent studying a specific unit of the teachers choice.  Teachers receive training to use STC or FOSS units listed below.  A master teacher guides participants through about 15 hands-on lessons of that unit preparing teachers to rent it for use in their own classroom.

Teachers that have used the science units have reported successful classroom experiences and that they felt well prepared by the training.

This summer we are offering training in the following units:  (unit descriptions are on the registration form)
